NDI® video uses a lot of bandwidth, which is why we call it ‘Full/High Bandwidth’, which is especially recommended for applications where latency can be critical (such as in a live environment), therefore NDI® video must be run on dedicated high-speed AV networks.
NDI®| HX, also called High Efficiency, uses H.264 video compression allowing it to produce high quality video streams at low data rates, making it ideal when network bandwidth is limited (also suitable for public internet, remote Wi-Fi, large-scale remote networks, etc.). In proAV Apps, lower bandwidth is fine (no need for high bandwidth), everything depends on each application, e.g. Medical (X-rays, medical content with all color information, etc.) versus lecture capture where latency is not an issue but sorage optimization must be met!
To give numbers, a full bandwidth NDI® will use approximately ~150Mbps with latencies of ~16ms for a 1080p60 stream where NDI®| HX uses anything between 1 and 50 Mbps with latencies between 80 and 200 ms depending on the equipment used.
NDI® and NDI®| HX are both compatible with, for example, Vmix and especially with the numerous free NDI 5 tools.
